Things to See & Do in Greece

The Acropolis

Probably Greece's best known landmark, it should be one of the first stops on any visit to Greece. Easily the most famous of all the monuments in the Acropolis is the Parthenon. Built between 447 and 438 BC, the Parthenon was dedicated to Athenas Parthenon, the patron goddess of Athens. Originally including friezes, mesotes and pediments, these were all stolen at the beginning of the 19th century by the British, and are now exhibited in the British Museum. Other monuments on Acropolis Hill include the Erechtheion, the Temple of Athena Nike and the Propylaea, a massive gateway to the complex.

The Ancient Agora

Lying in a valley under the Acropolis, the Agora was the heart of ancient Athens. This is where Plato and Socrates taught and espoused their philosophies thousands of years ago. Indeed, throughout the city's history, the site has been continually occupied, and it was first used as a residential and burial ground as early as 3000 BC. Some of the major monuments in the Agora include the Temple of Hephaistos, the most prominent and probably best preserved of the Agora monuments, the Stoa of Zeus Eleutherios, the Temple of Apollo Patroos and the Monument of the Eponymous Heroes.

Greek Islands

Choosing which island to visit is largely dependent on what you plan to do there. If your aim is to party hard in the evenings and relax on the beach all day, islands such as Ios, Mykonos or Corfu are your best bet. Santorini is a beautiful island, formed by a collapsed volcano. Crete, the largest of all the Greek islands, has a well-developed tourist industry focused on the north of the island, whereas the rest of the island is quite unspoilt, offering local traditions and ancient monuments. For the best advice on which island will suit your holiday, just contact us and we will be more than happy to offer our advice. Regardless, at most of the islands, you will quickly fall under the spell of the laid-back lifestyle, enjoying the whitewashed houses, gorgeous scenery, crystal clear waters and fantastic food.

Mount Olympus

Greece's highest mountain, at 2919 metres, Mount Olympus was also the home to the chief Greek god Zeus. A number of other gods also have their palaces at the summit of the mountain. Any climbs up the mountain will start from the village of Litochoro. A number of hostels and hotels can be found in this village, as well as experienced climbing and tour companies. Mount Olympus is also known for its rich flora, several species of which are endemic.

Olympia

Olympia, located in the Peloponnese, is the site of the original Olympic Games, which began in 776 BC. The Olympic Flame is still lit there today, as well as an assortment of temples, marble inscriptions and civic buildings. Amongst these are the Temple of Zeus, which originally housed one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, a mammoth gold and ivory statue of Zeus. Also located here are two interesting museums, the Archaelogical Museum and the Museum of the Olympic Games. The best way to get to Olympia is either to drive or to catch a train.
